A Tour of Meyer Werft  in Papenburg

The Quantum left this shipyard just a few days ago.
The Anthem of the Seas (a sister ship to the Quantum) is under construction.

Meyer Werft is a unique shipbuilder.
Ships are built here in a gigantic assembly hangar. So all the works are done under the roof.
A disadvantage of this shipyard is location.
The ships have to be conveyed miles and miles down the River Ems before they rich open sea.
Both factor (the hangar size and location) put certain limits on the size of the ships.
Nevertheless, the Quantum of the Seas is the largest passenger ship ever built in Germany.

This gigantic gates will move to a side to give way to the ship when it is ready for floating out.

This is how ships were launched in Meyer Werft a few decades ago.
The launch of the Homeric - one of the most famous ships built in Papenburg.

The Homeric - Westerdam

The Homeric is being stretched at Meyer Werft to become Holland America Westerdam.
After many years at sea as Westerdam and a few years as Costa Europa, this ship is now the Thomson Dream
